GLOBAL PEACE FOUNDATION TANZANIA PARTICIPATED IN PEACE MEETING HELD IN ZANZIBAR

The Global Peace Foundation Tanzania is the Tanzanian Chapter of the Global Peace Foundation International based in Washington DC, which is non-sectarian, non-partisan, nonprofit organization, which promotes an innovative, values-based approach to peace building, guided by the vision of One Family under God. Global Peace Foundation engages and organizes a global network of public and private sector partners who develop community, national, and regional peace building models as the foundation for ethical and cohesive societies.

With chapters in Kenya, Nigeria, Uganda and Tanzania, GPF maintains a strong presence in Africa and has a successful track record of promoting peaceful coexistence and mitigating extremist and sectarian violence. The chapter in Tanzania is very new but their efforts in promoting peace has been recognized by society.
Global Peace Foundation Tanzania chapter participated in a solidarity meeting on 12th March 2016, between faith leaders from the Mainland, Unguja and Pemba in Zanzibar to consolidate support, launch the programme of community dialogues with community radios and release a joint statement on maintaining peace during the re-elections in Zanzibar. They was represented by their Country Director, Ms Martha Nghambi.

The meeting was organized by Inter Religious Council for Peace Tanzania (IRCPT) and UNESCO, involved Religious Leaders from both Tanzania mainland as well as from Zanzibar, aimed at ensuring peace in the coming elections in Zanzibar.

After extensive discussion, the participants resolved the following:

RESOLUTION:


1. We Religious Leaders do congratulate our fellow Tanzanians in Zanzibar for tolerance and maintaining peace during election and after the elections.

2. Religious Leaders should dissociated themselves from politics, and play their role to maintain religious harmony, and lead as example while advocating for Peace

3. Security forces should identify and take proper actions against any breach of peace so as citizens can live in peace. They should exercise reasonable force during their actions without intimidating people.

4. Political parties that providing wrong statements and misinformation should refrain from doing so in order to maintain peace. Everyone has a duty to protect the most valuable item, peace for the sake of the national.


5. We ask for justice on the part of Zanzibar Election Commission, in exercising their duties by ensuring laws and regulations are being adhered, as well as integrity and fairness taking place in order to maintain peace during and after election.


6. Media are expected to offer responsible and fair coverage based on values and principals guiding their profession so that to maintain peace and harmony during and after election

7. Where there is a breach of peace, security forces should promptly take legal action against the perpetrators.

8. The Citizens, who are also our followers, should take their responsibility to protect peace from their hearts, since it is their responsibility spiritually and socially.

9.Those who are planning to participate in the election to exercise their basic democratic rights should be assured peace same as those who decides not to participate, both decisions should be respected and assured of peace.
